Guide to Setup Wireless Home Network:
A number of manufactures like Netgear, Dlink, Linksys, USRobotics offer wireless networking equipments. Though you can purchase mix & match routers and adapters, but it is advised to go for products from same manufacture. Instead of going for Internal wireless cards it is better to go for USB adapters which can be easily plugged to system.
Wi-Fi technology uses the IEEE 802.11 standard. Recent trend is 802.11n which is faster than 802.11g over vastly a increased range. Existing 802.11g supporting devices (laptop or game consoles with built in Wi-Fi) will work with the new technology, but won’t benefit from the improved speed.
Wireless signal is interrupted by thick wall, floor and furniture also powerful electrical devices (built in motors) and power cables. So, place the router centrally and top of desk avoiding such obstacles. Also adjust the antenna direction by which all the equipments will receive optimal signal.
C. Secure your Connection:
Unless you encrypt your connection anybody can leech through it. Login to router using the manual and find the Security Options under Wireless Settings. Enter a security key more than 8 characters (combination of numbers & alphabets) and note down the key which will be used when connecting a new device to the router. Longer the key length, it will be hard to be cracked. While choosing the mode of encryption it is better to choose WPA or WPA2 over WEP.
D. Setup Wireless Home Network:
Step 1 : Look for the Internet Connection port in your Router and plug the internet connection into it. Put an Ethernet cable (temporarily for configuration) from your PC to Router. Now power on the router.
Step 2 : Open Internet Explorer and type the default IP address of the router(mentioned in the manual). Enter administrator Login ID & password when prompted. If your router comes with a built-in modem, follow the instructions to set up your internet connection. Finally enter a unique SSID and secure your connection. Save the setting once configuration is over and restart the router.
